LoveLearning: The Beauty of the Point and Shoot
Here's the thing: my students often ask me if it's ok for them to bring just any camera to class. Does it have to be a DSLR? Can I use my iPhone? Is it ok if I just use my point-and-shoot? My answer is this: any camera is a good tool. Any camera will do. Every camera has something to teach us about light and storytelling. It's all up to us to use the tool properly.
I started off with a Sony Cybershot. My mom bought me one a few years back and I used that little baby like it was all I'd ever have. I learned light and composition with my W30. I went all through Bali rocking that little gift.
I shot macro, I went on photo treks (on a scooter - LOVE!), I took portraits - with my little W30.
I loved that silver box to pieces and used it until it gave up on me. I knew that little box's every nook and cranny, it became an extension of me and using it was as natural for me as making my coffee in the morning.
The last few pictures it took was of my little boy. I love its parting gift.
When my Cybershot left me, I took the dive and got me my Canon 500D. Which I also fell in love with. And then my 5D MkII joined the fray with all its bells and whistles and I. am. in. heaven.
My right elbow was not.
In heaven, I mean. It started to complain and is now waging a full head on war against the rest of my body. That pain plus new rules left and right saying we can't take photos inside malls with our DSLRs, well.. that ushered in my Canon A3300 IS. Which I welcome to the collection. With open arms, though one is a little stiff with pain.
I'm looking forward to what this one will bring to the table.. or the screen… or even unto paper.
It's like going full circle, only not, because it feels like an optical illusion which is anything but.

Story Book: Photography and its Journey in Art
Photography is a beautiful art as it involves the artist, the subject, and a myriad of other artisans in its artistic process. I like that it is as much as a lonely art as it is a social one. It is all about people working together to make something real good!
I'm an IFAC photographer and infused awareness into my community through a Special Portrait Session last November. It was an exciting event as families came to participate in the special session. We had a stylist and make-up artists volunteering their time and effort for the day. Here you find the photographer, a community of photographers and the photographer's community working together for one cause: breast cancer awareness. (Remember, people working together to make something real good? That's one right there.)
The art process did not end there, however. There was post-processing to be done, putting up galleries for viewing, choosing images for the collection - all done with the photographer and clients collaborating to choose images to keep, memories to store into pages and prints.
While this was going on, other people worked hard to make sure the images would be kept and presented in a beautiful story book of that day. They worked together with the photographer in making sure the keepsake was top-notch quality with all the prettiness it could take - and delivered within a tight schedule! I could have not asked for a better group than Susan Album to work with.
I loved the simple elegance of their products from first touch. Their pages had a simple organic feel to them that felt just right! And the people who manage the place? They're fantastic! They're patient, professional and was very accommodating. I can not have enough good words to say about them.
After weeks of emails and phone calls, my Story Books came and I was wowed.
I loved every single detail and am quite proud to have them in my collection!
Is this the end of the artistic process? That's another good thing about photography, it's possible for the process never to end! (Have I said how glad I am to have worked with Susan Album in making these precious pieces? I am.)

Portraits | Yvonne & Alicia
This sweet mom came with her little one asleep in her stroller - which gave us time to sit and talk about what else we could do with a cause close to both our hearts: Cancer Awareness.
Then she woke up. And a sunny Saturday afternoon became sunnier!

Portraits | Heinrich . Sophie
They came in the afternoon with big smiles and enthusiasm! I'm so lucky to have real warm-hearted people to work with in this project!
It took some time for this tough cookie to break into real smiles… but he did. Isn't he sweet?
These two have such beautiful parents whose kindness and warmth shine through for all to see. I wish I could show you just how but, being real private people, they suggested I simply show it through their children.
Do you know tough love? *grin* I've seen these two almost everyday and this is what they have. Love in its rough and ready and bold state.
