Child Portraits | Tiara

She loves her Chipmunks. She loves her princess names. She loves her shade. No sun, please. She'll be as good as a princess and send you smiles as bright as sunbeams - as long as Mr Sun himself does not come for a visit nor a peek.

Photobucket

Such a little dynamite. All wit and sweetness. She's going to grow up to be someone, I tell you.

Photobucket

I truly enjoyed Tiara's photoshoot. Loved every second of conversing with this little sprite! And having her sweet parents - who are also photography enthusiasts - around made the morning all the more enjoyable!

Photobucket

Mrs Rance, Tiara's mom, wrote an entry on Tiara's experience as one of Moms Guide Indonesia Icon Search Top 10 Choice. Read all about it here.

Child Portraits | Hanami

Photobucket

Hanami reminds me of those beautiful porcelain dolls - but don't let her looks fool you, this little one is anything but fragile! She's such a willful little sweetheart who wants to get her way all the time! Truth is, though, when she looks at you with her pretty eyes, it is very easy to let her do as she pleases.

Photobucket

The camera loves her sweet face. (She reminds me of Snow White, do you see what I mean?)

Child Portraits | Alia

Photobucket

Alia is such an independent little girl who knows what she wants and asks for it. She looked through our box of toys and told us what she wanted to play with and did just that.

Photobucket

I love how she just let go and let play take over her.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I also love her beautiful eyes! It so reflects her love for life!

Child Portraits | Raisha

Photobucket

If eyes are truly the window to our souls, then Raisha's soul is simply filled with beauty! She is a lovely juxtaposition of edginess and softness: she shone with true grace and simply let her beautiful lashes go to work for her. She was low key and yet moved with full knowledge of what needed to be done.

And the colour pink? It just came to life on her!

Photobucket

(Raisha also happens to be the grand daughter of a wonderful woman I met last October for the Images for a Cure project. I'm not very surprised to meet her in an icon contest then - I see how grace and beauty and love flows through her veins.)

Child Portraits | Xakila

Photobucket

What do I say about this little one? That I admire her determination? That for a little, she knows more about commitment and passion than some other people I know?

Photobucket

That her smile is as sweet as sugar and that her eyes twinkle like stars during the day?

Photobucket

Can you see I'm smitten?

Child Portraits | Ellena

Photobucket

Ellena came in real quiet and very confident! Her quiet demeanor settled well on her young shoulders and her amiable soul was such a joy to work with! She is beauty and quiet strength.

Photobucket

Her take on the Funny Face Time was such a delightful surprise!

Photobucket

And her boots? LOVELY!

Child Portraits | Joyln

Photobucket

Joyln is all sweetness! Her smile is disarming, and the charm which radiates from her? Makes you think of sunshine-y days and beautiful gardens and cupcakes with friends.

She was such a trooper, too! Never mind the rain and the clouds, she just took it in and radiated warmth all around!

Photobucket

I love the way her eyes smile!

Child Portraits | Nayla

Photobucket

Nayla knew exactly what she wanted and she was not shy about it all. She wanted bubbles. She wanted the pink umbrella. She wanted to have fun!

She was the first stand in front of the lens and she had all the confidence in the world.

Photobucket

I loved her laughter and her infectious happiness!

Tea Sets and Girl Power: Where I've been these past few weeks. :)

Photobucket

I know I haven't been blogging for a while now. :) Been… (let's say it together shall we?) real busy. This photoshoot took a lot of my time - but this is not a complaint AT ALL. I loved every second of it: from planning it to shooting it to editing it and to watching it featured in a fashion show! Truly exciting to work with Moms Guide Indonesia and its two beautiful founders, Dian and Karmen.

Photobucket

I'll be sharing the Top 10's individual photos in the next few days but this one I can't help but share now. It's one of my favorites from the whole set. :)

Photobucket

Here's a sneak peek of the images from the shoot!  Love these sweethearts and very supportive moms and dads! :)

Family Portraits | Timothy

Photobucket

They came with smiles. They came with excitement. Most importantly, they came with love. Who can resist love?

Photobucket

It was present every second of the beautiful morning with this family. It was present through the battle against the heat (so sorry, Tim!).

It was present as we immediately moved locations to appease the overarm little boy.

Photobucket

Photobucket

And it shone through as we spent the rest of the morning in a beautiful restaurant who graciously allowed us our moments in love.

Photobucket

What is there not to love?

Here's a favorite picture:

Photobucket

Thank you, Lisha and Ade, for this beautiful gift!

How can you not love people who share their thoughts in such a sweet inspiring way! (Thank You, God, for sending me people who show me Your brand of Love: unconditional, inspiring, and robust!)

Down-right Beautiful! The Beauty of Down Syndrome through the Lens

Why do I do this? The reason is simple: I love documenting Love.

Photobucket

There is nothing like watching a mother look at her child and see her love just shine through her every pore. Or watching a father hold their child and see how the child feels so safe and secure in his arms. Or how an older sister hugs them close or an older brother lean in for a kiss. Really. Seriously. There's nothing like it.

This long weekend was blessed with this kind of love. Pure. Unadulterated. Overflowing.

I met Lisha, Ade, and their sweet baby boy Timothy. He didn't like the sun but absolutely loved the affection!

Photobucket

The next day rolled in and I went on a long journey south of Jakarta to meet Ningrum, Sakina and their beautiful family. Sakina is such a handful! She loved life and movement, her little doll, her mommy and her daddy. And her family? They just loved her right back!

Photobucket

Sunday was beauty all over again. Aqila ("smart" in Arabic, her mom informs me) came in with her mommy Nia and Dad and just brought sweetness with her beautiful eyes!

Photobucket

Love like this is addictive. Enticing. And, Life-changing. It opens your heart and your whole being to goodness and kindness and all that is warm and good. This is why I do this. To document Love at work and share what I see with everyone I know, in the hopes that they see it, too.

More to come soon!

Capturing Moments: 7 Tips on How to Make Beautiful Child Portraits

Photobucket

Have you ever taken photos of your precious ones and feel that the images were too serious? Or looked a little odd? Or that the children were everywhere but in front of your camera?

Here are 7 tips on how to make sure that the next time you whip your camera out, you create beautiful child portraits with your little sweetheart!

Photobucket

1. Relax.
If the photographer (you) is tense ("I need to get a really good picture!") or upset ("Why can't he keep still????"), your subject (child) is bound to be more active or less cooperative. People, especially young children, easily pick emotions up. If you're relaxed, happy, easy-going, they will be, too. It's always easier to get happy images from happy subjects. And who doesn't like happy children?

Photobucket

2. Know what you want - and can get.
Be clear on what you expect from your pictures. And work towards it. If you want a clean picture with a simple background, don't take pictures in your messy living room - unless, ofcourse, you have a pretty egg-blue wall in it with a huge window with loads of diffused light beside it. If you want a picture to tell a story, then make sure there is a story and that it's all included in your frame. For example, you want other people to see just how much mess your child can make, then by all means, take photos in a messy living room with the room in the frame, too.

Photobucket

3. The Rule of Thirds.
Not to be too technical but this is the simplest and easiest technical rule to learn. Read up on it and apply it in your photos. I won't go into details but here's an article about it that I recommend you read.

Photobucket

4. Time.
Choose the "when" wisely. Do you want calm photos of your child? Grab your camera and start clicking when they're about to sleep or just when they've woken up (unless they're cranky at either times. Then you can still get interesting photos, not calm, mind you, but interesting.) Or maybe when they've just had a meal. Or maybe when they're playing on their own in that quiet way young children have. Or… you know what? Best thing to do is observe your child - when is he most quiet? Take note of those times and grab your camera then. Or if you want happy action shots, take note of when he's most active and grab your camera then.

Photobucket

5. Props.
One way to make a photo interesting is to use props. This also gives your subject something to do. I heartily recommend bubble bottles and wands! The children love them and they make beautiful pictures, too! Other props include hula-hoops, baskets, balloons and anything else the child may be interested in.

Photobucket

6. Patience.
Refer to #1. Seriously. You'll find that there are times when you start relaxed and end up frustrated. Don't. Remember to be patient. You'll get that shot. Really.

Photobucket

7. Treasury of Jokes.
Or Nursery Rhymes. Or cartoon stories. Anything you can use to communicate with your subject is always good. It will help them look at you (if you want a straight on image) or look away (Wow! Look! Is that (insert cartoon character)?) or have a special look on their face (Can you look like Sleeping Beauty? Ha!)

This list is by no means comprehensive, I'm sure you have other tips you'd like to share. You can share those tips in the comment box below so others can benefit from them, too.
